Philadelphia Zoo | America’s Oldest Zoo

Kids will love the tigers, lions, giant tortoises, penguins, hippos, and much more. Besides the over 1,900 rare and endangered animals and award-winning animal exhibits and education programs, the zoo has an attraction just for kids called the KidZooU. 

The kids’ zoo spans 2.5 acres and features educational and recreational programming for children from toddlers to tweens. The kids’ zoo has indoor and outdoor exhibits where kids can get up close and personal with animals, learn all about them, and immerse themselves in hands-on activities. Some of the exhibits include the Butterfly Habitat, the Animal Action Lab, Ants, the Goat Bridge and Tower, and the Rare Breeds Nursery. Kids can also go on a scavenger hunt and ride the train or the carousel at the Philadelphia Zoo! Tickets cost under $20, and children under 2 get in free.

Philadelphia Museum of Art | Offering Special Programs Just for Kids

If you’re looking for things to do in Philadelphia with kids, you can’t miss this. The Philadelphia Museum of Art has a collection of over 240,000 pieces of artwork, sculpture, prints, drawings, and more. The collections include European art dating from the medieval era to the present, American art from the 1700s and 1800s, and Asian paintings and sculptures from China, Japan, and India. Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, and Salvador Dalí are among the many artists represented. 

As one of the top things to do in Philadelphia with kids, the museum offers amazing activities and opportunities to learn. They have the Art Kids Studio where kids can get creative and make their own art projects. Your kids will love the Art Kids Tours, where a museum educator takes you and your family on a museum tour designed for kids aged 3-10.

Franklin Square | A Carousel, Mini Golf, and More

Another one of the best things to do in Philadelphia with kids is Franklin Square. Franklin Square is a beautiful green space right in the middle of so much history. The 7.5-acre square offers families lots of outdoor fun and relaxation, only minutes from the Liberty Bell and lots of other history. Franklin Square is one of five squares designed by William Penn way back in 1682 and features one of the oldest public fountains in the nation, which was built in 1838. 

Also featured is the one-of-a-kind Philly Mini Golf, always a family fun activity. Ride on the Parx Liberty Carousel as well. The square has two playgrounds, and your kids will beg you to eat at SquareBurger, serving up the best burgers and shakes in town. The park is free, and Philly Mini Golf costs $11.50 for adults and $9.50 for students in grades 1-12. The Liberty Carousel costs $3.50 for adults and children, making it one of the perfect Philadelphia family activities.

Please Touch Museum | The Name Says It All!

The Please Touch Museum was designed with kids in mind, making it one of the top things to do in Philadelphia with kids. At the museum, every child is encouraged to be curious, explore, and learn, all while having fun!

Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse | Unstructured Play for Kids 10 and Under

The Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse is a 16,000-square-foot play area for kids ten and under, designed for children to play. The staff are trained in play and child development to offer your kids a welcoming, safe, and inclusive space where kids can have fun while interacting with each other and learning new things. Kids can put down their phones and video games for a few hours and engage in unstructured, imaginative play. 

The playhouse is for children five and under, and the playground is for kids under 10. The playground features a giant, 44-foot-long wooden slide, a complex of swings, a giant see-saw, and a jungle gym, all in an area the size of three football fields! Kids can also play with toys and games, as well as enjoy the tumbling room, the book nook, the climb-on train, and the indoor tricycle room. Smithville is a mini-town made just for kids to explore. The Franklin Institute | Kid-Friendly Exhibits Your Kids Can Explore

If you want educational things to do in Philadelphia with kids, check out the Franklin Institute. A very popular science museum, The Franklin Institute offers tons of bigger-than-life, kid-friendly exhibitions. Some highlights for kids include:

  • Wonderous space – take a trip through the cosmos in this immersive, multisensory, two-story exhibit your kids will never forget.
  • The sports zone – kids and adults can test their skills at pitching, jumping, surfing, and running while learning about the human body, laws of motion, and physical fitness.
  • Your brain – an 8,500-square-foot exhibit of the human brain your kids will love crawling through while learning about the brain.
  • The art of the brick – this is a must-see exhibit featuring artworks made exclusively from LEGO bricks. Pieces include Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and original artwork.  ​
  • The giant heart – walk through this two-story heart that is about the right size for a 220-foot-tall person! Learn all about how the heart works at the same time!

Morris Arboretum & Gardens | Where Kids Can Enjoy Nature

The Morris Arboretum & Gardens features a rose garden created in 1888, an English park, created around 1912, and a 6-foot-high rock wall garden, built in 1924. The Arboretum has exhibits and programs just for kids and families too! Kids of all ages (from 1 to 101) will love the encounter with live birds of prey. Go on the Tree Canopy Walk through the trees from 50 feet up, or visit the Whimsical Woods, which includes a 40-foot-long, tunnel made of living willow. 

The Fairy Garden invites kids and adults to create their own enchanted fairy houses. Other things to do in Philadelphia with kids include scavenger hunts and stories throughout the year. You can also sign up for a myriad of different classes for families, including Birding, Botany, Culinary Adventures, Growing Minds, and much more. Prices for the classes vary, but most are between $35 and $55. Tickets for the Arboretum are $12.00 for adults 17 and up, $6.00 for kids 3 to 17, and free for children 2 and under.

Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University | One of the Coolest Things to Do in Philadelphia with Kids

The Academy of Natural Sciences, opened in 1828, is the oldest natural sciences institution in the Western Hemisphere and features more than 18 million specimens of plants and animals from all over the world. The academy has fun and interesting programs and activities for families. Night at the Museum is an unforgettable, action-packed experience where families can spend the entire night among lions, tigers, and dinosaurs, explore all the exhibits, and enjoy a live animal show. 

Dinos After Dark is great for the whole family, where you can learn about dinosaurs, dig up fossils, and explore specimens. Admission is $27.00 for visitors 13 and above, $23.00 for children 2–12, and free for children under 2.
